Febuary 2000Ad Forum comp 'Fright Night'

My entry for the fright night themed comp. Sorry I haven't used this for a while, with limited time to draw I rarely get the chance to post here and take the time to type
creating hashtags on Instagram ;)

I went with Dawn of the Dredd, honestly I thought death becomes her with Death and Anderson was a better idea, but I don't really have large amounts of time to spend drawing at the moment.
Was good to use a brush again and I got some new nibs to try out too.
Once scanned I thought about the red in the logo and my brother liked the idea.
Once that was done though I wanted to go all out and pay tribute to the awesome graphic novel collection they have out (Reserve with your local new agents Thrill Seekers!), so did some spot red for the helmet then the missing finger and arm, couldn't just leave it though as I wanted to really try.
Hope it was worth all the work but I have seen the completion entries so far and the Ro-Jaws/Jaws mash up has my vote.

Hello Again!!

Apologies for the long silence.
Been very busy with working a few day jobs and then home to my children.
Even took this blog down for a while. So if you have had difficulty viewing it that's why. I have taken to a simpler appearance of the Blog. Let me know what you think.
Mostly been using instagram and have developed a love for Twitter and all the announcements re:Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shields picking up! So glad I stuck with it. Oh and we have the Flash TV series being made!!
Oh-Yeah!
Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy and X-men DOFP also looks set to be a return to greatness. And during my time off blogging I've been mostly reading Titian reprints of Batman/Superman, playing loads of Injustice, and Buying up as much Marvel Now as possible (do love Marvel AR, makes comics feel fresh again). Love the new direction of Hulk and all the tying into the movies with Phil Coulson popping up. Wolverines healing factor free and Cyclops is a villian (sort of)! Gotta love me Marvel!
I know I have said this allot but what a great time to be a comic fan/Geek!!
If you go on instagram please stop by and say ''hello!'' I'm WHughesArt  or in the world of tweets @carrot_graphix
I'm still doodling as much as I can (mostly been practicing hands)
So watch this space...

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone who's stopped by for a glance recently.
Here's a collection of my more gruesome sketches over the last couple years.

 theres even a poem!

the above zombies I drew just after watching a BBC documentary about the history of Paris, and its darker (filthier) roots. There was a guy talking about how when you die, your stomach bloats and bodily fluids leak from your genitals!

and of course, can't have demons running amoke without a little Spawn!

So HAPPY HALLOWEEN again everyone and thanks for reading.

Wolverine : origins 2

Check out @Marvel's Tweet: https://twitter.com/Marvel/status/395301811285790721
the preview of the art looks great, as always with any of the Kubert tribe
I did this last august. Just  a quick sketch for fun during a lunch break. A big Wolverine fan since the X-Men cartoon when I was 11. Remember copying a picture from the Sky magazine by Jim Lee when came out.  Trying desperately to get anything with face on it. Now my 6 year old son sleeps with a stuffed Wolverine. Its great how comics have become main stream here in the UK not the occasional toy in Woolies. One day I hope to create a comic that a kid will read like I did and become hooked on this fantastic, infinite medium.
(My own kids don't count.  I've been shaping them since birth!) :)

Harry Potter Double page spread

wayn hughes

Harry Potter (or Hairy Otter as my little girl used to say) is a great franchise and some wonderful characters, films and of course books. My girlfriends a big fan, I never was. But as a cultural exchange she watches every action, sci-fi fantasy and adventure film going for me!
Meanwhile…
On the boards I’ve used over the last couple years is a small section that tells you ‘when making a double page spread cut along the dotted line and tape at the back. However there’s never been call to do it.
So as a celebration of this awakening to the joys of Potter and feelings of ginger camaraderie with Ron, I drew my first double page spread and used this as my excuse.

I did a couple thumb nails, but overall had the idea in my head. Harry one side, Voldemort on the other.
Watching the films, the large Romanian dragon was a highlight for me.
One of the best dragon designs I’ve seen for a long time, so this was my centre piece.

I light boxed the elements to the board.

After finally cutting and pasting the back though!

Then I put in other elements that appealed, Dobby, the school itself and the image of a skull in the clouds

I then used water and flames and the rocks Harry stands on holding the sword as a sort of elemental link.

Still to finish inking this piece but has been so far.

please remember you can double click to enlarge all images!

DC talent search entry New 52 Harley intial sketches.

Having never submitted anything, I thought to myself 'getting on a bit now! maybe its time to either sh*t or get off the pot!'
so I began a search through Google for submissions to publishers and downloaded various script and more.
Was gutted to see however that both Marvel and DC no longer take submissions. Then I saw a link for this!
DC comics had a talent search that ended on the 1st of this month (October). So I had a week to produce my first submission and send it in.

The script was simple enough, if a little disconcerting (well I thought it was kind of funny tbh but umm... not really one I could share with my kids).
It was for page 15 of new 52 Harley Quinn and her own (3rd???) solo series. 4 panels. No text was on the sample they posted. Each panel with her in various states of suicidal actions.
Here's the original post on the DC website.

Read the following script page and give us your original artistic interpretation of what those four panels should look like on a single page:

PAGE 15

4 panels

PANEL 1
Harley is on top of a building, holding a large DETACHED cellphone tower in her hands as lightning is striking just about everywhere except her tower. She is looking at us like she cannot believe what she is doing. Beside herself. Not happy.

PANEL 2
Harley is sitting in an alligator pond, on a little island with a suit of raw chicken on, rolling her eyes like once again, she cannot believe where she has found herself. We see the alligators ignoring her.

PANEL 3
Harley is sitting in an open whale mouth, tickling the inside of the whale’s mouth with a feather. She is ecstatic and happy, like this is the most fun ever.
PANEL 4
Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

I'm not overly familiar with Harley Quinn except in the Bruce Timm batman animated series and the batman Arkham asylum game
but always enjoyed her character. especially her Brooklyn accent and her cartoonish darting about scenes and posing. So I looked into her new costume, I have no idea how valuable things like the universal guide to the marvel universe must have been before Google!
Also I needed to practice drawing women! ive never had much success with women on and of the page, so this was when I had to sit down and really get to grips with their anatomy...
I'm still very much learning but after this process I do feel a lot more comfortable drawing them.
here's some of my initial sketches.

getting to grips with the new costume
and then a spectre type character for good measure!
(Do love the Spectre, proud owner of his very first appearance! showcase #60)

got hung up one evening on her 6 knives being like wolverines claws so did the above sketch, but I had altered the forearm section of costume too much so scrapped it and did the following as you can see my earlier post...

just a taster but here's the rough n final version of my page.
Will at a later date go into the choices that I made on each panel and why....
